Cytogenetic bio-dosimetry techniques in the detection of dicentric chromosomes induced by ionizing radiation: A review

Abstract Ionizing radiation is ubiquitous in the environment. Its source can be natural, such as radioactive materials present soil and cosmic rays, or artificial, fuel for nuclear power plants. Overexposure to ionizing may damage living tissue could cause severe health problems (i.e., mutations, sickness, cancer, death). Cytogenetic bio-dosimetry has great advantage take into account inter-individual variation, it informative even when physical dosimetry not applicable; moreover, definitive method assess exposure recommended by World Health Organization (WHO). Such a procedure involves counting frequency of dicentric chromosomes (DCs), which are most studied chromosomal aberrations used absorbed biomarkers, during metaphase cells. A set algorithms, tested on different programming languages automatically identify DCs, analyzed authors together with an Automated Dicentric Chromosome Identifying software (ADCI) mostly based OpenCV libraries. The purpose this work review main results regarding correlation between cytogenetic bio-dosimetry.
